Utopia
In an alternate timeline, Channel 4 would still be producing episodes of their acclaimed sci-fi series Utopia. However, we unfortunately do not live in that world. Luckily, the US remake looks set to be just as brilliant.
Gillian Flynn, the author of Sharp Objects and Gone Girl, has revived the series for Amazon, and has done so with Sasha Lane, The Office's Rainn Wilson, and John Cusack. The series centers on a group of comic fans who meet online and bond over their obsession of a seemingly fictional comic called Utopia. However, things certainly are not what they seem...
Utopia
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
(Image credit: Amazon Prime)Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino hits another home run with a show that’s, on the surface, cut from an entirely different cloth. The late 1950s are a tough time for women everywhere, including those like Miriam “Midge” Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) on the Upper West Side, who remains under the thumb of her husband. A devoted wife who supports her husband’s desire to be a stand-up comic, it’s soon revealed that Midge herself has quite a gift for the gag on-stage. The show won five Emmys and two Golden Globes in its first year, with Brosnahan winning the same Globe the following year.
There is so much to love about Maisel. If you’re a fan of rich storytelling that’s not gloomy and doesn’t involve murder (c’mon, a LOT of prestigious television shows are pretty downbeat) then you’ll get a kick out of this. Brosnahan is one of the best actors working today, bringing heart, warmth, humor, and a fire in her belly to the role of Midge. The best scenes are the after-hours debriefs with her friend/manager Susie, played by Family Guy’s Alex Borstein. But make no mistake: this isn’t a fluffy series. It’s an R-rated show, with explicit language and nudity.
Sneaky Pete
After his release from prison, Marius (Giovanni Ribisi) decides to get creative with his newfound freedom. Instead of picking up where he left off, at the mercy of gangster Vince (Bryan Cranston) for the $100,000 he owes, Marius opts to assume the identity of his cellmate Pete who remains behind bars. Pete’s estranged family welcomes "Pete" back into the fold as if nothing’s happened, and Marius starts to discover that his new clan might be a source of further trouble.
Its well-written scripts and fantastic performances are what have turned Sneaky Pete into one of those sneaky shows that weave their way into your mind and refuse to let go until you’ve watched just one more episode. This is top-notch viewing that’s a relentlessly bingeable mix of crime, comedy, and drama.
The Man in the High Castle
Imagining what the world might be like had the Allied forces lost the Second World War is terrifying. It’s an idea so frightful that sci-fi mastermind Philip K. Dick crafted his 1962 novel based on that concept, from which this Amazon Original series takes its inspiration. The world no longer looks the same. Under Nazi rule, the sprawling North American continent has been divided into three territories, and it's inside those borders that this gripping story of a small Resistance group unfolds.
As an alternate history, not necessarily a distorted reality, the show is gripping. It makes for such compelling viewing because it bears many recognizable symbols from the real world. As well as a few ventures into genre territory...
The Tick
(Image credit: Amazon)Before The Boys, there was another superhero on Amazon. We are, of course, talking about The Tick, an invulnerable hero who fights crime and has a nervous, befuddled sidekick. When the villain The Terror returns, the pair must work together to save the city's civilians. With its tongue-in-cheek humor and meta-superhero antics, this one's a joy to watch from start to finish – and a huge shame Amazon didn't continue the adventure past season 2.
The Tick
Tales from the Loop
(Image credit: Amazon Prime)A local town of people in Ohio live above "The Loop," a machine built to unlock and explore the mysteries of the universe. The Loop makes the impossible possible, and each episode looks at the life of one of those it affects.
Inspired by the famed paintings of Simon Stalenhag, this sci-fi anthology delves into the lives of those who live above The Loop in compelling and thoughtful ways. Stalenhag has built a cult following due to his depictions of imaginative alternate realities, and this unconventional narrative beautifully complements his work. The stories are interconnected, and the cast – including Rebecca Hall, Jonathan Pryce, and Paul Schneider – is fantastic.
American Gods
(Image credit: Starz)Based on Neil Gaiman’s phenomenally successful book of the same title, American Gods is incredibly unique. The series tells the story of fading old gods as they are replaced by new gods with specialties familiar to us 21st-century pilgrims. There are the God of technology and media, ones who have risen from our devotion to the worldwide web and unprecedented connectivity.
Yet, the old gods aren’t leaving quietly. And when they're played by the likes of Ian McShane, who has the gravitas needed for such a role, then you can expect fireworks every episode.
American Gods
Truth Seekers
(Image credit: Amazon Prime/Stolen Pictures)Get your night vision goggles ready – Simon Pegg and Nick Frost join forces once again for the supernatural comedy series Truth Seekers. The eight-episode series follows a team of part-time paranormal investigators as they travel across the UK in search of evidence of the supernatural. However, it's all fun and games with their homemade gadgets and comedic hijinks until they begin to uncover a conspiracy that could bring about Armageddon for the entire human race. Yikes.
The Wilds
(Image credit: Amazon Prime)A series that revolves around a group of people who crash land on an island and something mysterious is happening. No, we're not talking about Lost, but The Wilds, which – while the premise may be familiar – takes a different path. A group of teenage girls are en route to Hawaii for a women in power retreat when their plane crashes, and they are stranded on a mysterious island. Little do they know, this is all part of a larger plan.
However, unlike Lost, which kept secrets from viewers, The Wilds provides more answers, and we're more interested in how they survive being left alone. This is a YA series to devour.
The Wilds
Reacher
Alan Ritchson plays Jack Reacher in this new crime thriller series, a retired military police officer who's arrested for a murder he didn't commit and finds himself in the midst of a conspiracy involving corrupt cops and scheming politicians. Based on Lee Child's books, this season is based on Killing Floor, the first novel in the Jack Reacher series – Tom Cruise previously played the character in movie adaptations of other books.
The Underground Railroad
(Image credit: Amazon Studios)Barry Jenkins’ last project was Moonlight, one of the best Oscar-winning movies of all time. Now, the director returns with a limited series on Amazon, The Underground Railroad, which has already received rave reviews for its powerful storytelling. The series follows Thuso Mbedu’s Cora Randall as she attempts to escape slavery by riding on the eponymous underground railroad – however, in this alternate timeline, the railroad is not simply a network of safe houses and hidden routes, but a physical railroad with trains and conductors. With an excellent ensemble cast and beautiful cinematography, The Underground Railroad tells a powerful and painful story that’s best watched over multiple evenings rather than all in one sitting.
The Terminal List
The Terminal List is another Prime Video action-thriller series. (Image credit: Prime Video)The Terminal List stars Marvel actor Chris Pratt as James Reece, a Navy SEAL suffering from survivor's guilt and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) after his entire platoon is wiped out during a covert mission.
When new information emerges that puts the responsibility on morally gray characters within the armed forces and US government, Reece decides to take matters into his own hands and seek revenge on those who wronged him and his deceased squad members.
The Terminal List wasn't well received by critics, with some calling it a formulaic show that doesn't offer thrills beyond what viewers have seen before. However, others praised Pratt's performance, the show's action sequences, and its thematic resonance. It has been renewed for a second season and a prequel, so it must have done something right.
Seasons on Prime Video: 1
The Rig
The Rig is a thrilling supernatural drama on Prime Video. (Image credit: Amazon Studios)Supernatural and/or mystery thrillers are abundant these days – but what about shows of that ilk set aboard a Scottish oil rig?
That's the premise of The Rig, a spooky Prime Video series that combines eco-horror with character-driven storytelling from a bygone era. Game of Thrones' Iain Glen and Filth's Martin Compston lead an ensemble cast in the series, which sees the crew of the Kinloch Bravo rig cut off from the rest of the world when an eerie fog rolls in. Unsurprisingly, there's more to this mist than meets the eye – cue fraying tempers, betrayals, tests of endurance, and more sinister occurrences.
The Rig has been fairly well received by critics, so you'll want to *ahem* dig deeper into this one yourself and see if it's one of the best Prime Video shows. Season 2 was greenlit by Amazon in February.
Seasons on Prime Video: 1
Jack Ryan
Jack Ryan's third season tests the character in new, tension-fueled ways. (Image credit: Amazon Studios)This politically charged action-thriller has been quite successful for Amazon, thanks in part to John Krazinski's charismatic and entertaining take on the titular CIA analyst.
Pulled away from his usual desk job to further investigate a string of suspicious bank transfers, Ryan finds himself entangled in a broader geopolitical conspiracy where he can't trust anyone – and nobody is willing to trust him. Unsurprisingly, things get more suspenseful and intense with each passing season.
It's not as thrilling or subversively humorous as, say, Prime Video's Reacher (more on that later) or similarly positioned spy shows. But, with plenty of high-stakes drama, impressive set-pieces, and a likable cast, Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan is worth investing your time in.
Seasons on Prime Video: 4
The Consultant
The Consultant is Prime Video's answer to Apple's Severance TV series. (Image credit: Prime Video)Described as a twisted comedy-thriller, The Consultant stars Christoph Waltz as Regus Patoff, the newly-appointed consultant of CompWare, an app-based company. When the mysterious and rather sinister individual begins assigning tasks to his employees that go beyond their usual remit, it's up to the staff of CompWare to decide how far they'll go in pursuit of greatness.
With elements reminiscent of Apple TV Plus shows Severance and Mythic Quest, The Consultant fills the workplace genre void. Waltz delivers another outstanding performance as the enigmatic Patoff, while the show's other elements provide ample payoff, making it worth a watch.
Seasons on Prime Video: 1
The Boys
(Image credit: Amazon)In a world where superheroes are everywhere, it's hard to stand out. Thankfully, there's The Boys, a brutally funny adaptation of Garth Ennis' bloody (and bloody brilliant) comic book series. From the gripping setup of a corporation filled with corrupt Supes in the first episode to the mind-bending cliffhanger of the finale, nothing Marvel or DC has brought to television has captivated us the way The Boys' blend of blood, chaos, and expletives does.
The hero of the story is Hughie, a regular guy whose partner is brutally murdered by a corporate Supe. Billy Butcher, who has his own history with the superpowered, has a vendetta, and he teams up (well, forces a team-up) with the reluctant Hughie. A few more non-Supes join in, and The Boys are formed. It only gets messier from there...
Gen V
Gen V is a fantastic companion piece to Prime Video's The Boys. (Image credit: Brooke Palmer/Prime Video)Set between The Boys seasons 3 and 4, Gen V is a hilariously macabre, thematically weighty, and drama-filled superhero spin-off that'll tide you over until the main show's next installment arrives.
Jaz Sinclair stars as Marie Moreau, an orphaned Supe who earns a place at the prestigious superhero school Godolkin University. There, she must navigate the preppy cliques, make friends for the first time in years, immerse herself in all aspects (you know, sex, drugs, etc.) of campus life, and – oh yeah – help unravel a mass conspiracy within the bowels of the college itself.
In our review of Gen V's first six episodes, we said it "adds heaps of gore and other adult material, thematic weight, and original storytelling that characterizes this self-aware, witty corner of the superhero genre." It's a must-see companion piece ahead of The Boys 4, expected to debut in 2024.
Seasons on Prime Video: 1
The Grand Tour
The Grand Tour is a, well, grand Prime Video TV series. The Grand Tour is everything that Top Gear used to be on the UK's flagship terrestrial channel, aka the BBC. Well, Top Gear specials, at least.
Having departed the BBC years ago and struck up a deal with Amazon Studios, petrolheads Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May have found similar levels of success with The Grand Tour – an excuse to send the trio around the world, partaking in various challenges and sniping at each other for hours on end. If you enjoy watching middle-aged men burn rubber in the middle of the desert, like a scene out of Mad Max: Fury Road, then this is for you.
Seasons on Prime: 4
Three Pines
Three Pines is a gripping crime thriller that'll hook you instantly. (Image credit: Laurent Guerin/Amazon Studios)Based on Louise Penny's Chief Inspector Gamache novel series, this Canadian crime thriller has earned plenty of acclaim since its December 2022 launch.
Alfred Molina (Spider-Man: No Way Home) stars as Armand Gamache, who travels to the titular Eastern Township to investigate a series of grisly murders. There, he must confront demons – including his own – from all corners and unearth long-buried secrets that the town's population has hidden away.
As detective tales go, Three Pines isn't groundbreaking. But, thanks to Molina's riveting, soulful performance and some surprising twists and turns, it's a show that delivers a largely fascinating whodunnit – all set in a picturesque snowy location. Unfortunately, Three Pines was canceled after one season.
Seasons on Prime Video: 1
Upload
Upload is a whimsical but heartwarming Prime Video sci-fi series. (Image credit: Liane Hentscher/Amazon Studios)Set 15 years in the future, Upload tells the story of Nathan Brown (Robbie Amell), a computer programmer who's mysteriously murdered and uploaded to a 'virtual afterlife' location called Lake View.
As he adjusts to his new existence, Nathan finds himself romantically drawn to his customer service angel Nora Antony (Andy Allo), despite still being involved with his still-living girlfriend Ingrid Kannerman (Allegra Edwards). It isn't long before Nathan and Nora begin to unravel the wider mystery surrounding his death.
If that all sounds a bit dramatic and bleak, don't worry: Upload is one of the funnier Prime Video shows out there, straddling multiple genres including comedy, drama, mystery, and horror. It also offers an intriguing glimpse into the potential future of our technological world, metaverse and all. Season 3 arrives on October 20.
Seasons on Prime Video: 2
Swarm
Dominique Fishback stars in Swarm as Dre, a young woman who becomes completely obsessed with the world's biggest pop star, Ni'Jah (Nirine S. Brown). Ni'Jah's fanbase, known as 'The Swarm', takes Dre on a journey to some unsettling places. The show explores the dark side of celebrity idolization with a blend of black humor and satire. Created by Donald Glover and Atlanta writer Janine Nabers, the series also features Chloe Bailey, Billie Eilish, Rory Culkin, and Damson Idris.
Fleabag
Fleabag, originally a theatre one-woman show by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, now adapted into a TV series available on Amazon Prime, is a must-watch. It retains the theatrical elements with brilliant fourth-wall-breaking moments. The story follows Fleabag, a woman living life on her own terms in London. Though she possesses a sharp wit, her everyday experiences are far from comedic as she navigates grief and heartbreak. Combining modern-day themes with Waller-Bridge's likeable personality, Fleabag brings a fresh style of black comedy to television.
Deadloch
Deadloch is an underrated comedy murder mystery show. Set in Tasmania, the series follows two investigators with contrasting personalities, Dulcie Collins (Kate Box) and Eddie Redcliffe (Madeleine Sami), as they work together to solve the mysterious death of a local resident. With clever writing and powerful comedic performances, Deadloch delivers satirical and dramatic moments. The show strikes a perfect balance between darkness and humor, leaving a lasting impression.
A League of Their Own
A League of Their Own, based on the 1992 film, tells the story of the Rockford Peaches, an all-female baseball league team. Set during the Second World War era, the show explores the challenges faced by the players in a society plagued by misogyny and chauvinism. Abbi Jacobson's character, Carson, and Chanté Adams' character, Max, are the central focus, while other characters are expertly developed throughout. The show offers both style and substance, providing a rare and refreshing sports-centric TV experience. Unfortunately, Amazon cancelled the series after one season.
Undone
Undone, created by Raphael Bob-Waksberg (creator of Bojack Horseman), is a genre-mashing comedy-drama like no other. The story revolves around Alma (Rosa Salazar), a 28-year-old woman struggling to find her place in the world. After a car crash, Alma gains the ability to travel through time and communicate with her deceased father, who needs her help to solve a mystery. Undone incorporates themes of trauma, identity, and loss, taking inspiration from David Lynch and using rotoscoping animation. Season 2 of this unique series is now streaming.
The Legend of Vox Machina
The Legend of Vox Machina is a superb anime-like Prime Video show. Set in the fictional kingdom of Tal’Dorei, the series follows a group of misfit mercenaries, known as Vox Machina, who are hired to eliminate an evil entity threatening the realm. However, they soon discover a much greater enemy. With a perfect blend of humor, action, and emotion, The Legend of Vox Machina captures the essence of the original online Dungeons & Dragons campaign that inspired it. The show features the voice talents of the original Critical Role cast, as well as famous actors making guest appearances.
Mammals
Mammals is a dark comedy-drama available on Prime Video. James Corden plays Jamie, a Michelin star chef whose life falls apart when he discovers that his pregnant wife, Amadine (Melia Kreilling), has been having multiple affairs. The series explores the world of swingers culture with a mix of black and surreal humor, even featuring a cameo from Tom Jones. While Mammals doesn't revolutionize its associated genres, its engaging tale and unique humor make it a show worth watching.
I'm a Virgo
I'm a Virgo is a critically acclaimed comedy series that delves into absurdity and creativity. Jharrel Jerome portrays Cootie, a 13-foot-tall teenager who has been sheltered from the world by his aunt and uncle for the first 19 years of his life. When political activists accidentally expose Cootie's larger than life presence, he embarks on a surreal journey to find his place in the world. The show, created by Boots Riley (director of Sorry to Bother You), is a highly original and imaginative endeavor that deserves recognition.
Harlem
Harlem, created by Tracy Oliver, is a fantastic comedy series that gained critical acclaim upon its release. The show follows four New York University alumni in their 30s as they navigate their work, love, and personal lives in the vibrant neighborhood of Harlem. Contrary to predictable narratives, Harlem stands out with its electrifyingly funny main cast and their dynamic interactions. Fans of Insecure and Run the World will thoroughly enjoy this series.
The English
The English, a UK-US collaboration, is a bold and operatic Western series that brings a fresh perspective to the genre.
