Larva

Larva

Yeah...it gets like this.

Like Ren & Stimpy and roughly 25% of Spongebob, Larva is a show that contains inappropriate content. There’s no real way around that label given its focus on bodily functions and cartoon violence that sometimes leads to actual death. However, there’s a very big difference in the inappropriateness of this show compared to so many others — it’s 100% targeted towards kids.

While Ren & Stimpy’s every revealed butt cheek and Spongebob’s subtly hidden penis jokes are meant to provide a laugh for the adults watching, Larva's excess of toilet humor is there simply because kids enjoy it. The two main characters, one red and one yellow caterpillar, often engage in pratfalls and gross jokes because, like kids, the world can seem large and scary to them. When they're together, roughhousing, farting, and being weird, they find comfort and laughter. It's a way to make their world a bit smaller and more manageable. It may not be profound or socially redeeming, but sometimes we all could use a good chuckle. For kids, Larva is a laugh riot.

The Facts of Life in 1980.

Although the series got off to a shaky and unfocused start, The Facts of Life found its footing when it began to focus on Blair, Tootie, Natalie, Jo, and their headmistress Mrs. Garrett. This bold series not only centered on four adolescent girls, but it also tackled a wide range of subjects in each episode. True to its title, the comedy aimed to teach both its characters and viewers that life is filled with ups and downs. That's just a fact.

You Can't Do That On Television

Green slime is very important to childhood.

You Can't Do That on Television holds the distinction of being the birthplace of Nickelodeon’s iconic green slime. But it was so much more than that. Launched in Canada in 1979, You Can't Do That on Television presented variety show-style sketches for children. It involved drenching countless kids and a few adults in water and slime, and slamming endless locker doors. The show had a rotating cast and aired for 144 episodes across 10 seasons from 1979 to 1990. Fun facts: A pre-teen Alanis Morissette appeared five times, and Les Lye, the only adult to appear in every episode, played multiple roles, including the show's stage manager and various characters. Slime is in. Incompetent adults are out.

Kim Possible

Kim Possible

Eliminate the impossible.

A brand of early-aughts girl power takes center stage in the fun and fast-paced Kim Possible. The title character, Kim Possible, juggles high school, friends, family, and cheerleading while also saving the world on a regular basis. She is accompanied by her sidekick Ron Stoppable and his pet naked mole rat Rufus, who always manages to generate lots of laughs. In many ways, Kim Possible feels like a fully animated version of the beloved Lizzie McGuire. In a world where girls are still searching for great action heroes, Kim Possible's classic feminism continues to work wonders.

Inspector Gadget

Inspector Gadget

Warner Bros

Imagine a combination of The Pink Panther's Inspector Clouseau and Get Smart's Maxwell Smart, but as an equally daft and bionic police inspector who fights crime across the globe. Add in a brilliant and savvy young niece named Penny, a brainy dog named Brain, and a big bad organization called M.A.D. (Mean and Dirty), and you've got Inspector Gadget. The show, which aired from 1982 to 1986, delivered 88 episodes of pure silliness. The on-the-nose casting of Don Adams, the voice of Inspector Gadget, added to the entertainment. Get ready for some gadget-filled adventures!

Captain Planet

Captain Planet

Fox

Why can't Captain Planet appear unless he's summoned? Does he not exist without the belief that he exists? What do the magic rings do? Do they actually need the rings, or could they just call Captain Planet?

Hopefully, if you have a cool kid, they will ask all of these exact same questions while watching Captain Planet. The absurdity of the show is still great for kids today, perhaps even more so than it was in the '90s. If you ever scoffed at the idea of an ecological superhero back then, you're certainly not laughing now. The utter lack of cynicism is what makes this show immortal. Too bad Captain Planet doesn't exist in real life.

Looney Tunes

No childhood would be complete without exploding sticks of dynamite. Yes, various aspects of Looney Tunes are bizarre, violent, and straight-up disturbing, but in that way Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and all the rest reflect the real world. Life is looney, and at the very least, we should have a sense of humor about it.

The enduring impact of Looney Tunes is almost impossible to measure. Some purists would rank this show much higher on a list like this. We think it's important that it's here, but the truth is a discussion of Looney Tunes is much bigger than this list. Hot tip: Buy the DVDs. Getting all the good stuff online is going to be tricky for a while.

Care Bears

Care Bears

Filmation

OK, Care Bears is not cool. But consider, for a moment, the existence of "Grumpy Bear." In all versions of the Care Bears, "Grumpy Bear" remains. The idea that all the Care Bears represent the different feelings of children, and that the show does not shame the concept of an ever-present grumpiness, is not only brilliant, but it’s also very kind. Children need as much love as the world can give. But, they also need to know it’s OK to be grumpy sometimes.

Pre-teen stepbrothers Phineas and Ferb make the most of their long summer vacation by building crazy contraptions and going on wacky sci-fi-ish adventures, while their older sister Candace plots to rat them out to Mom. And we haven't even mentioned their pet platypus Perry, who's secretly a spy. It's all whiz-bang silliness, with lots of action and some catchy original songs. Fun fact: Thomas Brodie-Sangster, who wowed in The Queen's Gambit and won audiences' hearts as the little boy in Love Actually, voiced Ferb, while Ashley Tisdale (The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, High School Musical) voiced Candace. The talent of Phineas and Ferb is immense. It's good because great people are in it.

Doug

Nickelodeon

Of the original Nicktoons, Doug was the most grounded and the one with the most heart. It was easy to fall in love with Doug Funnie, who wrote in his journal every day, oftentimes about his adventures with his friend Skeeter and his feelings for Patti Mayonnaise. Doug dared to be weird while also relishing in the mundane aspects of adolescence, such as schoolwork, bullies, best friends, and unrequited crushes. With a colorful cast of characters, including Doug's plucky pup Porkchop and artsy sister Judy, the show left a lasting impression on everyone growing up alongside Doug and the other residents of Bluffington.

The Original Ghostwriter on PBS

For a show designed to strengthen the reading and writing skills of children, Ghostwriter was surprisingly captivating. Maybe it was the backdrop of a romanticized version of New York City in the mid-'90s, or the well-developed and authentically diverse characters that included Black, Latinx, Asian, and white kids solving mysteries together. Perhaps it was the character of Ghostwriter himself, a disembodied spirit who could make words appear on computer screens and in the sky, all visible only to the chosen kids who could see him and summon him with their special pens. The show not only taught reading and writing skills but also encouraged critical thinking by prompting viewers to keep track of clues. Get ready for some two-hour-long story arcs!

One of the greatest musical shows to hit Nickelodeon, The Backyardigans represents a very specific moment in the early 2000s. In some ways, this show was the anti-Teletubbies, mostly because it contains so much wit, charm, and heart. Shows that encourage sing-alongs can become tricky, but luckily, The Backyardigans maintains its appeal. The songs are so good that TikTok has even created a whole Backyardigan renaissance.

The Adventures of Puss In Boots

The adventures of puss and boots

The coolest cat of them all.

What is it about Puss In Boots that keeps us all wanting more? The brash, fearless, and reckless cat with a sword is not a character who grows or reveals his complexities over time. He remains brash, fearless, and reckless in the face of his enemy-filled world. And yet, he’s not a two-dimensional character that can’t carry a show. After all, his determination and defiance are charming and relatable — especially to the braggadocious 5-, 6-, or 7-year-olds who make up the ideal audience for Puss. While the Puss In Boots movies are masterful Quixotian cartoon adventures, the Puss In Boots television series (on Netflix, from 2015-2018) is more focused on the joy of the characters, bringing the adventure home to the cat and his pals. The show may not be binge-worthy due to its sometimes predictable plots, forgettable villains, and light lessons, but Puss is undeterred, wearing his confidence like a badge and owning up to his mistakes by the end of each episode, until the next episode begins with swords drawn and ready to fight.

Shaun The Sheep

Shaun the Sheep

Aardman

Nick Park spun off this very British stop-motion animated children’s show from his super-popular Wallace & Gromit universe. Basically, in each seven-minute episode, the mischievous Shaun the sheep tries to help his flock stave off utter boredom as they live out their lives on a farmer’s property. Determined to rein in the chaos is Bitzer, the farmer’s sheepdog, and Shaun’s frenemy. Since the animals, including the bad-boy pigs, don’t speak, Park and company amplified the slapstick comedy and the characters’ eyes, expressions, and, well, bleating.

The Wild Thornberrys

Wild Thornberrys

The masterstroke of The Wild Thornberrys is that Eliza Thornberry’s ability to speak to animals is a total secret. She couldn’t let anybody know, which added a level of tension and, weirdly, relatability to her otherwise fantastic life. What kid wouldn’t want to travel around the world chatting with elephants, tigers, and chimpanzees instead of going to dumb ol’ school? And yet, the fact that Eliza always had to stay guarded (with humans, at least) gave The Wild Thornberrys a sense of stakes that any viewer could get invested in.

Do kids know who Orson Welles is? It doesn't really matter because the joy of Pinky and the Brain was in watching the evil genius Brain and his dimwitted associate Pinky try to take over the world. Even if '90s kids didn't get the reference, Pinky and the Brain's reverence for the pop culture of ages past elevated the show above many of its Saturday morning cartoon competitors.

PBSWhile many children in the '90s might not have been geography experts, they were more than willing to put their knowledge to the test and help track down the elusive Carmen Sandiego. Although Carmen Sandiego was a niche game show, it offered something for audiences of all ages and knowledge levels to enjoy. While the show aimed to educate, what kept us hooked were the catchy geography-themed songs performed by Rockapella. Variety/Penske Media/Getty ImagesWhile game shows were a staple on network television, Double Dare was one of the first shows that allowed kids to be the contestants. Marc Summers, the show's affable host, struck a balance between being a "cool dad" figure and a firm enforcer of the rules. The questions ranged from easy to challenging, catering to its target demographic. However, it was the physical challenges that kept us coming back for more. The show's charming setting included The Max, a trendy restaurant conveniently located next door and staffed by students during school hours. While the main couple of Zack Morris and Kelly Kapowski took the spotlight, jock A.C. Slater and feminist Jessie Spano provided an interesting dynamic on the show. With his catchphrase "Did I do that?", Urkel caused chaos, conducted scientific experiments, and pined for his crush, Laura Winslow. The show managed to maintain interest through clever storylines, including the introduction of guest stars like Donna Summer as Urkel's Aunt Oona and Michelle Thomas as his girlfriend Myra Boutros Boutros Monkhouse. Each viewer has their own favorite character, sight gag, wordplay, or memorable performance. While each 10- or 20-minute short is enjoyable on its own, watching them in order allows us to witness the growth of the kids as they join and eventually leave the gang. Indulge in the delightful adventures of Garfield and Friends.

Warner BrosEven at its Reagan-era best, Jim Davis' creation, Garfield, was a pleasant, if pandering, mediocrity. However, Film Roman elevated the franchise with their classic animated specials like Garfield on the Town and Garfield's Halloween Adventure, followed by the series Garfield and Friends, which aired from 1988 to 1994. Lorenzo Music, a co-creator of The Bob Newhart Show, provided the perfect voice for Garfield. The series showcased Garfield's laziness with charismatic charm, surpassing even Bill Murray's portrayal in the film adaptations. The talented team at Film Roman, known for The Simpsons, The Critic, and Family Guy, ensured that the animation and character design were visually appealing. CBS Photo Archive/CBS/Getty ImagesIn the 1970s, when Sesame Street dominated the Emmy Awards for best daytime children's show, Star Trek briefly broke that streak in 1975. Star Trek: The Animated Series, a reboot of the famous sci-fi show, was created as an animated series for children. The show traded Captain Kirk's fist fights for more rescue missions, representation, and imaginative alien encounters. While the animation style may feel dated by today’s standards, the series still captivates with its intelligence and wit. Each episode presents a unique exploration of assumptions about villains, often resolving conflicts through dialogue or using phasers set to stun. Notably, Star Trek: The Animated Series was also one of the first major children's TV shows to address the death of a pet on screen in the emotional episode "Yesteryear." It remains a compelling and engaging entry in the Star Trek universe. — RB

The Electric Company

Thomas and Friends

PBSThe Electric Company, which aired from 1971 to 1977 and consisted of 780 episodes over six seasons, stands out as one of the most lively and exciting children's entertainment series ever produced. Not to mention the incredible lineup of guest stars, including Mel Brooks, Joan Rivers, Gene Wilder, Diane Keaton, Walt Frazier, and Carol Burnett, both in live-action and voiceover roles.

The show features a variety of segments, ranging from sketches to animated bits like "The Adventures of Letterman!" and catchy songs—all with a lesson, moral, or piece of advice. Although the show may seem dated, it has had a significant influence on subsequent children's programming and can truly be described as one-of-a-kind. Puffin Rock

Avatar

The adorable puffins may steal the show, but there's more to Puffin Rock than meets the eye. As one of the gentlest shows made for toddlers and preschoolers in the 21st century, it takes young viewers on a whimsical journey alongside a group of creatures living on a quaint island near Ireland. What truly sets Puffin Rock apart, however, is the narration by Chris O'Dowd, who brings a constant sense of slight bewilderment to the show. It's as if he's channeling his character from Bridesmaids and transforming into the omniscient god of this charming children's universe. The unflappable voice and narration style of Chris O'Dowd serve as an inner mantra for parents, providing comfort and levity in challenging moments. The Real Ghostbusters

Magic School Bus

In 1984, Ghostbusters wasn't initially intended for a young audience. However, everything changed with the arrival of The Real Ghostbusters cartoon series in 1986. Not only did this show revolutionize our understanding of ghosts (seriously, some of those creatures were pretty out there), but it also challenged the preconceived notions of reality for '80s and '90s kids.

The first script editor of The Real Ghostbusters was J. Michael Straczynski, known for his work in comics and sci-fi TV, including creating Babylon 5, co-writing the first Thor movie, and co-creating Sense8. Straczynski's involvement ensured that the early seasons of The Real Ghostbusters had a legitimate science fiction flavor. He is truly a master of his craft. — RB

In 1984, the debut of Transformers undoubtedly left a lasting impression on an entire generation. Moreover, the sci-fi world-building of Transformers was more cohesive than that of Star Wars, fostering a deep attachment among multiple generations of children to these sentient robots who could seamlessly transform into cars, planes, trucks, and even cassette tapes. The brilliance of Transformers lies in its ability to ignite a child's imagination, allowing them to envision anything around them as a potential robot in disguise. Tom and Jerry

Rugrats

We would tell Jerry to watch out, but, well, you know.

Warner BrosNo cartoon quite embodies physical comedy like Tom & Jerry (sorry, Wile E.). The ceaseless chase that unfolds in each of the show's 164 episodes is a symphony of action, with multiple movements that build up and down, constantly shifting expectations. All of this culminates in an epic finale where Jerry, the resourceful mouse, evades the clutches of Tom, the mischievous cat. However, to simply dismiss this cartoon as just a chase would be like reducing Charlie Chaplin to a talented faller.

Tom & Jerry is, in fact, a philosophical treatise, an allegory reminiscent of the Sisyphean tale. The roles are clear, the tasks and outcomes predetermined, yet the lessons derived from each escapade are ever-evolving. This becomes most apparent in episodes that disrupt the traditional chase, such as "The Night Before Christmas" (1941). In this classic episode, Tom achieves his victory by locking Jerry outside in the cold snow. But instead of basking in his success, Tom looks at the closed door, silence enveloping the scene. He becomes a cat without purpose—a moment that evokes a genuine sense of dread. Thankfully, Tom reveals his "humanity" by opening the door, thawing Jerry, and sharing a candy cane, ultimately resulting in the expected détente. The chase never truly ends, but it evolves, allowing them to outwit each other another day. What other ending could possibly suffice? — TT

Doctor Who

Despite its current popularity among a much larger fan base, many do not realize that Doctor Who originally started as a children’s program in 1963. Created by Sydney Newman and Verity Lambert for the BBC, the main purpose of the show was to introduce children to scientific concepts and lessons in history using time travel as the storyline. At the same time, Doctor Who aimed to provide family-friendly action and adventure, featuring a protagonist who relied on their intellect and problem-solving abilities rather than firearms.

Even after six decades, Doctor Who has mostly stayed true to its original mission. Although the show caters to more than just families now and is better suited for children aged 8 and up, it still maintains an optimistic and positive atmosphere. The titular Doctor is characterized as “never cruel or cowardly,” and even in the darkest of adventures, the series remains wise, humorous, and compassionate. In fact, within the show's mythology, the Doctor has two hearts, symbolizing the depth and complexity of the metaphors employed. The iconic time/space machine known as the TARDIS is "bigger on the inside," a testament to the show’s ability to captivate multiple generations of fans. When viewed from the perspective of a parent, it becomes evident why Disney’s decision to acquire Doctor Who for 2023 makes perfect sense. — RB

Doctor Who is currently available for streaming on HBO Max and BritBox. It will also be available on Disney in Fall 2023.

The Octonauts stands out by not trying too hard to impress. This animated series features a brave crew of explorers who happen to be talking animals. Each character has their own catchphrase that seamlessly integrates with a format reminiscent of beloved series like Star Trek, Voltron, and Thunderbirds. The Octonauts not only entertains but also educates with its non-violent and highly informative approach. Through "Creature Reports" and later "OctoReports," viewers gain knowledge about various animal species and natural phenomena. The Octonauts strikes a perfect balance, engaging young minds with valuable lessons and smart humor, without resorting to overused quirks.
