Despite vowing to heal, he endured a lot of pain caused by the ailment and ultimately passed away on November 8, 2020, aged 80. In his honor, Stage 10 at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, California, was renamed "The Alex Trebek Stage."

In July 2020, four months before his passing, Alex Trebek authored a book about his life entitled The Answer Is... Reflections on My Life, which became a best seller and was published by Simon & Schuster. He also received a posthumous tribute from Lisa Rogak, who wrote a book about his life titled Who Is Alex Trebek? and published it via Thomas Dunne Books in the same month.
