American Vandal (2017-2018)
Image via Netflix
Created by: Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda
Cast: Tyler Alvarez, Griffin Gluck, Jimmy Tatro, Melvin Gregg, G. Hannelius, Lukas Gage, Callum Worthy, Travis Tope, DeRon Horton, Taylor Dearden
Perhaps the greatest mystery of American Vandal is how it managed to both expertly parody true-crime documentaries while also authentically capturing the voice and humor of late-2010s high schoolers. (The second greatest mystery is, of course, “Who drew the dicks?”) Aspiring filmmaker Peter Maldonado (Tyler Alvarez) gets to the bottom of his school’s biggest scandal by interviewing classmates, recreating party scenes via a series of Snapchats, and conducting forensic studies. The experiment is such a success that in season 2, Peter is invited to investigate the “Turd Burglar” case at a Catholic school in Washington. The results are engrossing and hilarious – we only wish Peter got to solve more mysteries before the show was canceled! — Mary Kate Carr

The series consistently makes some grave miscalculations, but its impact on teens and adult viewers cannot be discounted. Plus, the writers and actors succeed in convincing viewers to invest in its characters, despite some truly atrocious events they’ve been a part of.

On My Block (2018-2021)
Nicola Goode/Netflix
On My Block is described by Netflix as a "coming-of-age comedy about four intelligent and street-smart friends navigating their way through the triumphs, challenges, and new experiences of high school in a rough inner city." However, this description doesn't fully convey the charm and emotional depth of the supposed "comedy," or the incredible talent showcased by the small cast. If you haven't started watching yet, season three has recently been released, so it's worth pausing your current binge to catch up.

When Coach Billy Baker (Taye Diggs) recruits football player Spencer James (Daniel Ezra) from South Central for an opportunity at a "better education and a safer school," the teenager must adjust to his new environment at Beverly Hills High School and bond with his new teammates. While it's hard not to draw comparisons to The O.C. and Friday Night Lights, All American doesn't shy away from embracing these similarities. Watching All American fills the void left by these nostalgic shows, as it stands out among the sea of teen detective stories and serial murder plots.

Riverdale (2017-present)
©CW Network/Courtesy Everett Collection
Yes, Archie (but make it sexy) takes the 10th spot on this list. Let me give you four reasons: Choni. Bughead. Varchie. Barchie. In just its first two seasons, Riverdale introduced some of the most popular romantic pairings in recent TV history. Though the CW series has its share of flaws and critics, its commitment to a noir, timeless setting and its disregard for realism make it one of the most enjoyable and visually appealing shows on television. Don't like a storyline? It will likely be resolved within half a season. Stick around for the iconic one-liners, stunning costumes, attractive teenagers, and wonderfully chaotic musical episodes.
To be honest, the series hasn't been as "good" since its first season, which I will defend as exceptional television until the end. However, for those who question its placement at number 10, I argue that regardless of its flaws, Riverdale has had a faster impact on launching actors' careers and influencing youth culture than any other teen drama since the show ranked 3rd on this list.

Smallville (2001-2011)

Smallville may have lost some of its edge by its fifth season, but during its early years, this show about Superman's teenage life managed to strike a balance between grounded storytelling and campy elements, adding depth and allure to the beloved comic book world. Smallville paved the way for The CW's Arrowverse to thrive. And let's be honest, there has yet to be a hotter and more genuine leading man than Tom Welling as Clark Kent. We'll overlook the fact that he was 24 years old while playing a high school freshman. That's on The WB.

One Tree Hill (2003-2012)
©CW Network/Courtesy Everett Collection
I have to be honest: I'm biased. In 2003, there were two groups of people—those who loved The O.C. and those who preferred the even more angsty One Tree Hill. (No, claiming you loved both equally isn't valid.) Set in Tree Hill, North Carolina, the series initially explores the intense rivalry between half-brothers Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) and Nathan Scott (James Lafferty), who compete on and off the basketball court and struggle with their father's affection. While One Tree Hill didn't leave as much of a cultural impact as The O.C., it still had catchy music, incredibly attractive actors, and makes for a highly enjoyable rewatch.
