The Magicians (2015 - 2020)
"The Magicians" is a beloved series that holds a special place in the hearts of its fans. Set in a magical college filled with captivating and often disastrous twentysomethings, the show strikes a brilliant balance between the worlds of Harry Potter, Narnia, and pure fun. With its blend of profound storytelling, chaotic moments, and witty banter, "The Magicians" transports viewers into a realm where magic is a matter of every day, and where the characters, especially Julia Wicker and Margo Hanson, become cherished favorites. Despite its devastating fourth season, the show remains an entertaining spectacle worthy of admiration.
Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (2016 - 2017)
Representing the K-drama side of the entertainment world, most people would recognize this show as Goblin. One of the most popular dramas to come out of South Korea in recent years, Goblin features Gong Yoo and Kim Go-eun as the main characters Kim Shin and Ji Eun-tak. Kim Shin is known as the Goblin, while Ji Eun-tak is referred to as the Goblin's bride. She is the only person who can bring an end to the Goblin's long and painful existence. It's a heart-wrenching romance that is unique to K-dramas.
Goblin had me in tears from the beginning to the end because the story is that moving. If you enjoy fantasy with a strong dose of romance, this is definitely a show you should watch.
Supernatural (2005 - 2022)
Another show that has left a mark in history, and one that will transport anyone who was active on Tumblr during the early 2010s. Just hearing "Carry On My Wayward Son" is enough to make fans lost in nostalgia. Supernatural, with its long duration, needs no introduction. Describing the fandom experience can be quite complicated; one had to be there to truly understand it.
At its core, the story of Supernatural is simple: two brothers, Dean and Sam Winchester, were raised as monster hunters by their flawed father, John. The early seasons of the show are all part of a larger narrative arc that brings the brothers into contact with Hell, Heaven, and their inhabitants, including the angel Castiel. The rest, as they say, is history. And it's also considered the greatest love story ever told, as even Urban Dictionary attests.
Supernatural has a special place in my heart, although I must admit that as the show progressed, it no longer consumed me as it did in the beginning. The quality declined in its later seasons, which prevented it from ranking higher. Nevertheless, its impact cannot be denied, which is why it had to be included on this list in some capacity.
American Gods (2017 - 2021)
American Gods, developed by Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, is based on the novel of the same name by Neil Gaiman. Gaiman is a well-known author of fantasy stories that blur the lines between the real world and the supernatural. The show follows the character Shadow Moon, portrayed by Ricky Whittle, who becomes entangled in a global conflict between the Old Gods (such as those from Norse, Egyptian, and Celtic mythologies) and the New Gods, which symbolize technology and globalization.
As the seasons progressed, American Gods lost some of its impact and the initial shine it had in its early episodes. However, the concept that drives the story remains brilliant and enjoyable, as do the performances of the entire cast. The portrayals of Mr. Wednesday by Ian McShane and Mr. Nancy by Orlando Jones are particularly noteworthy and leave a lasting impression.
A Discovery of Witches (2018 - 2022)
Based on the book series called the All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness, A Discovery of Witches is the perfect urban fantasy for those who appreciate the darker side of academia. The series stars Teresa Palmer as Diana Bishop and Matthew Goode as Matthew Clairmont, a powerful witch and an ancient vampire, respectively. It takes viewers on a journey from their first meeting at the University of Oxford through their adventures in a dangerous magical world, across different time periods, and explores their passionate love story.
The atmosphere and cinematography of A Discovery of Witches are impeccable, as is the chemistry between the main characters—despite the typical age difference that often comes with a vampire storyline. The plot may be considered "typical" for the genre, but it is executed exceptionally well.
Merlin (2008 - 2012)
Merlin is a nostalgic trip for me and all the original Tumblr enthusiasts. You know who you are, and you know I'm not wrong—Merthur was just as important as any other popular ships in our fandoms. In fact, it still is. This BBC series manages to create a timeless relationship between the young wizard Merlin and the charismatic prince, later king, Arthur. The show features all the beloved characters from Arthurian legends, including Morgana, Guinevere, Uther Pendragon, and Sir Lancelot.
Merlin evokes many fond memories for me, even if that includes crying throughout the entire Christmas holidays of 2012 after "The Diamond of the Day" aired. However, looking back at the show with objectivity, I must admit that the visual effects require a significant suspension of disbelief. That is why it is ranked lower in this list.
Game of Thrones & House of the Dragon (2011 - 2019, 2022 - ongoing)
Of course, it is no surprise that the first position in this ranking is dedicated to the fantasy world of Game of Thrones. The television series adaptations of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire have become legendary, despite their numerous flaws.
While Game of Thrones may have brought fantasy into the mainstream and captivated audiences with superb storytelling, it also disappointed many with its final seasons. The impact of the series should not be underestimated. Its prequel, House of the Dragon, is still finding its footing, but the success of its first season is promising. As a fan, I couldn't resist including this universe with its unhinged rulers and awe-inspiring dragons—they mean everything to me.
This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the hard work of the writers and actors currently on strike, the content covered in this article would not exist.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance
This television series serves as a prequel to the beloved Jim Henson film, The Dark Crystal. Age of Resistance expands upon the fantasy world of Gelflings and pays homage to the late and renowned puppeteer. The story revolves around a trio of heroes who ignite a rebellion against the Skeksis, a ruling class that poses a threat to the planet's survival.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance offers an immersive experience with its exceptional atmosphere and imagery. You can watch the show on Netflix.
