Ortega, Jenna
American actress Jenna Marie Ortega was born on September 27, 2002. She got her start in show business playing young Jane on the CW's comedic drama Jane the Virgin (2014-2019). Her breakout role as Harley Diaz in the Disney Channel series Stuck in the Middle (2016-2018), for which she won an Imagen Award, was her big break. In 2019, she played Ellie Alves on Netflix's You for its second season, and in 2021, she headlined the family film Yes Day.
Ortega became known as a scream queen after her roles in the 2022 horror films X}https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scream_(2022_film)" target="_blank">Scream and X, for which she received critical acclaim, and the 2021 teen drama X}https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fallout_(film)" target="_blank">The Fallout. Golden Globe consideration came her way for her performance as Wednesday_Addams" target="_blank">Wednesday Addams in the Netflix horror comedy series Wednesday (2022).
Early life
As the fourth of six kids, Jenna Marie Ortega[1] was born on September 27, 2002, in Coachella Valley, California. Her mother is of Mexican and Puerto Rican ancestry, and her father is of Mexican ancestry. Ortega, who has not "really lived a normal lifestyle" because of her professional obligations, has said that she regrets missing out on high school activities like prom and graduation. [5]
Career
From 2012-2017, I had a few small roles at Disney and did some acting.
After seeing a play when he was six years old, Ortega was hooked on acting. With the help of her mother and agents, she started getting auditions when she was eight years old,[6] and she made her acting debut as a guest star for Rob in the 2012 episode "Baby Bug." After that, [7] she played Aimee Moore in an episode of CSI: NY called "Unspoken. She debuted in the film industry in 2013 with a small role as Vice President Dana White's daughter in the superhero film Iron Man 3. Following this, Ortega played Annie, a supporting character, in Insidious: Chapter 2, the second installment of the Insidious horror film franchise. The two movies did well at the box office. [9][10]
After playing Zoe Leon on Rake[11] in 2014, Ortega went on to play a younger version of Jane on the romantic drama Jane the Virgin from 2014 until 2019. In the 2014 cult classic The Little Rascals Save the Day, she played Mary Ann for a second time on the big screen. In 2015, Ortega was a main cast member on the critically panned Netflix original series Richie Rich, playing the role of Darcy, a gold digger who wastes Richie's money without his permission. When she was 17, she played Anna Chapa in the film After Words. [18]
Afterward, Ortega starred as the lead of the Disney Channel sitcom Stuck in the Middle from 2016 to 2018[19] as Harley Diaz, the middle child of the seven Diaz siblings and an aspiring inventor. Ortega's performance earned her an Imagen Award, and the show was a success, earning her two nominations. In the same year, [21][22] she started voicing Princess Isabel on Disney's Elena of Avalor, a role she held until the show's cancellation in 2020. She and the cast won another Imagen Award and were nominated for another in 2019 due to the show's success. 2017's "Chapstick" music video, which also features singer Jacob Sartorius, features her. Significant media attention was paid to the music video in which Ortega played the female love interest of rapper Sartorius. [25]
Inclusion in Mainstream Roles, 2018-2020

In 2018, Ortega starred as Dawn, the daughter of a circus owner, in the film Saving Flora. Ortega's performance was lauded, and the film as a whole was met with generally favorable critical reception ([26][27][28]). At the Southampton International Film Festival, she was considered for the role of "Best Lead Actress." The second season of the Netflix thriller You premiered on December 26, 2019, with Ortega in the lead role of Ellie Alves. In You, she plays a sassy and interfering young woman who likes to put on an air of maturity far beyond her years. Ortega said, "I wish I had gotten to shoot with Victoria more, because I think she's really talented," in reference to her time spent on set with Penn Badgley and Victoria Pedretti in [33]. Penn is an absolute delight to collaborate with because he is an excellent communicator, thoughtful, respectful, and kind. "[34] Both the season and Ortega's performance were praised, as they had been during the show's first season. [35][36]
Ortega plays Pheobe in the 2019 Netflix horror film The Babysitter: Killer Queen. As she explained to Cosmopolitan, "because it was a sequel, all of the other cast members already knew each other," she was "incredibly nervous" before filming began. Not knowing what I was doing, I went onto the set in a state of panic. The film opened in theaters in September of 2020 to lukewarm reviews. [41] In the 2020 Netflix animated series Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous, Ortega provided the voice of Brooklyn. [42] Critics were divided on the show, but they praised Ortega's voice work and the ensemble cast overall. The second season of the show, which will premiere in 2021, has been picked up for broadcast. Ortega announced in 2020 that her first book, titled It's All Love, would be published the following year in January of 2021. Ortega then played Katie Torres in the Netflix comedy Yes Day. [45][46] She was cast in 2019,[48] and the film was released in March 2021 to mixed reviews (though praise was reserved for her performance). [49][50][51]
Beginning in 2021: New Developments and Wednesdays
Ortega starred as Vada in the March 2021 release of the high school drama film The Fallout;[52] the film debuted on HBO Max on January 27, 2022. [53] After being cast in February of 2020, production didn't begin until August/September of that year. Critics were generally favorable toward it,[54][55] and several called Ortega's performance her "breakout" in the film industry[57]. According to [58]The Hollywood Reporter: Ortega's nuanced performance recognizes both the bland exterior and the vulnerabilities. Decider agreed, praising her performance as "raw without going overboard. Because of her dedication to the role and intuitive grasp of the character's emotional beats, even the most trite moments in Vada's arc come across as sincere and genuine. Vada was her first major film role, and Variety hailed Ortega as having "found her voice" in the role. CinemaBlend gushed about her and Maddie Ziegler's on-screen chemistry, saying, "the two girls at the center of it all also look phenomenal, as a true bond can be sensed in the process of bringing this story to life." She "smoothly shoulders a role, richly written in lovingly messy complexities, and gives it breath as well as staggering sobs," [61] according to a review by Mashable. "[62]
"I don't even think there are words in the English language to correctly express how happy, excited, and nervous I am for this journey," Ortega said after being cast as Scream_(film_series)_characters" target="_blank">Tara Carpenter in the upcoming slasher film Scream in 2020[36][63]. From September to November of that year, filming took place in Wilmington, North Carolina" [64] She said of her co-stars Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette, "You never know what to expect when you're meeting people of that standard, but they truly were just the most down-to-earth, sweetest people." Her performance in the film earned her the MTV Movie Award for Most Frightened Performance, and the critical reception was overwhelmingly positive. [[5][65][66][67] The film emerged as a critical and commercial success, becoming the 28th highest grossing film of 2022. [70][71]
Ortega has appeared in two horror films: Ti West's X (March 2022) and the February 2022 X}https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foo_Fighters" target="_blank">Foo Fighters-led X}https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Studio_666" target="_blank">Studio 666. X}https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/#cite_note-72" target="_blank">[72]X}https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/#cite_note-:232-73" target="_blank">[73]X}https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/#cite_note-74" target="_blank">[74]X}https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/#cite_note-75" target="_blank">[75] The latter was well received by the critics[77][78]; Screen Rant said of Ortega and her role-swapping co-star Mia Goth, "the pair's performances as two horrified wannabe pornstars turned survivalists are as shocking as they are compelling." Scream, Studio 666, X, and American Carnage (2022) gave her the roles that earned her the moniker "scream queen" from various media outlets. [80][81][82][83][84]
Ortega played the title role of Wednesday Addams in the Netflix comedy horror series Wednesday (2022),[11][85] which she described as a "new chapter" in her career. She did "the most physical transformation I've ever done; I cut my hair, and it's black, and mannerism-wise, speaking cadence-wise, expression-wise," [11] she said. She later referred to the first season's production as "the most overwhelming job" she'd ever had, describing how she was constantly stressed out and confused about the show's and her character's future. Ortega's portrayal of the character in the series was met with critical acclaim, with some calling it the best portrayal of the role to date. She was considered for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Series [88][89]. [90]
Upcoming
Toby Wallace, Ben Foster, and Tommy Lee Jones are among Ortega's co-stars in the upcoming Paramount thriller Finestkind[91]. She will also be reprising her role as Tara Carpenter in Scream 6. Miller's Girl, produced by Lionsgate and Point Grey, will feature her alongside Martin Freeman. Ortega described her role as Miller's Girl as "the most complex character that I've ever played" [94] and said that the material was "risky." Winter, Spring, Summer, or Fall, a romantic drama in which Ortega will star, will begin filming this year. [96]
Intimate sphere
Ortega has actively advocated for immigrant rights and policies on the political stages where she has participated. Since she was 13 years old, Ortega has been a vocal advocate for Pride Over Prejudice, a movement that works to end discrimination against the LGBT community. To Teen Vogue, she said, "It's important to embrace your culture today because there are so many different ethnicities in America," expressing her support for immigration and opposition to discrimination. Ultimately, you are just who you are. You can't change who you are just to please other people or to feel at ease in a given situation; instead, you must remain loyal to the person you truly are. "[100]
Ortega hosted a fan event in 2016 to benefit a young cancer patient's family. [101] In 2018, at the Radio Disney Music Awards, Ortega wore a jacket, which displayed the words "I Do Care And U Should Too" in response to first lady Melania Trump's apparel when she went to visit immigrant children who were being housed without their parents, which read "I Really Don't Care Do U " [102] There was a lot of press about the protest. As Ortega recalled to Forbes, "I remember I was going through the news on my phone and I saw what Melania wore on the way to visit the immigrant children." I felt so insulted, and in that very moment I knew exactly what I wanted to say in response. "[97] Throughout 2019, Ortega appeared at a number of WE Day concerts to benefit WE Charity in the United States and Canada. [103]
Ortega will represent Neutrogena as a spokesperson beginning in 2020. On being named an ambassador, she exclaimed to Hola!, "I could not be more ecstatic." I know I sound like a broken record, but working with a company whose name has become synonymous with excellence for so long is beyond surreal. Ortega and Neutrogena's "For People with Skin" is a "team commitment to advance skin health for all consumers, regardless of race, age, ethnicity, skin need, or income,"[107] which Ortega announced on Instagram the following year. "[108]
When asked in 2022 if she ever considered leaving the acting world for a career in soccer, Ortega admitted she came close to making that very choice. She claimed to have played every attacking position and even the midfield at times, and she cited Lionel Messi as her favorite player. She was a member of the American Youth Soccer Organization when she was younger. [109]
Characteristics of and inspirations for acting
Ortega told E! Online in 2021 that she did not want to be "pigeonholed as an actor," so she has expressed a desire to expand her acting repertoire. She also said that her desire to "do the most diverse roles that I possibly can and really switch up" facilitated her move into more serious roles as she got older [[111]]. Having told Rotten Tomatoes in 2022 that she was "pretty comfortable with all the horror stuff," she has stated that horror works are where she feels most at home as a leading actress. [114]
Ortega told Collider she first became interested in acting after seeing Dakota Fanning in the 2004 thriller Man on Fire[99], in which she praised Fanning's "obviously talented from such a young age" performance. My goal was to become the Puerto Rican equivalent of her. She went on to call Denzel Washington "the coolest man I had ever seen in my life,"[115] and she praised his acting skills. Ortega lists Gina Rodriguez, who she collaborated with on the TV show Jane the Virgin, as a major inspiration. [116] She expressed her respect for Rodriguez, citing the similarities between their stories and praising Rodriguez for her determination and success. [117]
Consequences on the General Public
In 2020, Ortega topped PopSugar's list of "20 Under 20." According to The Hollywood Reporter, she was the "Next Big Thing" in 2022. [86]
When Ortega began appearing in horror films and television shows in 2022, she quickly became known as a "scream queen." Inverse, in an article about her celebrity status, noted that her many roles, including "the red herring and the Final Girl, even within the same movie," broadened the meaning of the term. [120]
