Ms. Lily James

A.K.A. Lily James, Lily Chloe Ninette Thomson (born April 5, 1989) is a famous English actress. She started her career in the British television series Just William (2010) after studying acting at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Her breakthrough came in the film industry with the title role in Cinderella (2015), following her work in the period drama series Downton Abbey (2012–2015).

Later, James portrayed both Pamela Anderson in the biographical series Pam & Tommy (2022) and Countess Natasha Rostova in the 2016 television adaptation of War & Peace. The latter resulted in a 2022 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. Her film credits include Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016), Baby Driver (2017), The Darkest Hour (2017), The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (2018), Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018), Yesterday (2019), Rebecca (2020), and The Dig (2021), among others.

Early life [ edit ]

Lily Chloe Ninette Thomson [2, 3] was born to actress Ninette Mantle and musician James "Jamie" Thomson on 5 April 1989[3] in Esher, Surrey[2][4]. She has an older and a younger brother. [5] [2] Her maternal grandmother was the American actress Helen Horton. [6] Her maternal grandmother was French; she married James's grandfather, a minister in the RAF, after escaping the Nazi occupation of her village near Paris. James completed her undergraduate degree at London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2010 after attending Tring Park School for the Performing Arts in Hertfordshire. [8] She made a deal with London's Tavistock Wood management not long afterward. [9]

Career [ edit ]

In addition to her role as Lady Rose Aldrige on Downton Abbey, she has also played the roles of Ethel Brown in the 2010 BBC adaptation of Richmal Crompton's Just William, Poppy in the fourth season of ITV's Secret Diary of a Call Girl (2011), and a number of other roles. In the show's fourth and fifth seasons, Lady Rose played a pivotal role. The series finale also marked James's second appearance as Lady Rose. [12]

In 2011, James played Taylor at the Young Vic Theatre in Tanya Ronder's stage adaptation of the novel Vernon God Little directed by Rufus Norris,[13] Nina in Russell Bolam's modern adaptation of The Seagull at Southwark Playhouse, and Desdemona in Daniel Evans' production of Othello at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield, with Dominic West and Clarke Peters

James played both Katrina and Marijka in a double-bill of Martin Crimp's plays in 2012 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Orange Tree Theatre in Richmond, London. The play is "performed with a persuasive mixture of mischief and deeper feeling by Obi Abili and Lily James," as Charles Spencer of The Telegraph put it; "the latter combining a mixture of neuroticism and glowing sexual allure that proves extraordinarily potent." James portrayed Korrina in the Warner Bros. film Wrath of the Titans and also starred in the Noel Clarke film Fast Girls, which followed a group of young female athletes as they prepared for the World Championships.

In the live-action 2015 Disney film directed by Kenneth Branagh, James portrayed Cinderella. For the December 2014 issue of Vogue, photographer Annie Leibovitz captured James as Cinderella in the blue ballgown she wears. James also made her singing debut in the film, performing three songs from the 1950 animated film during the closing credits: "Sing Sweet Nightingale," "Lavender's Blue," and "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes."

The 2016 BBC historical drama series War & Peace marked her return to television, playing Natasha Rostova. She also played Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, an action-horror film that parodied Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Poor reviews and a lackluster box office performance doomed it. Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet was performed at London's Garrick Theatre in 2016, with James playing the role of Juliet under the direction of Rob Ashford and actor-director Kenneth Branagh.

She had starring roles in several blockbusters last year, 2017. In Edgar Wright's action film Baby Driver, she played Baby's love interest Debora. As Elizabeth Layton, she appeared in Joe Wright's war drama Darkest Hour as a secretary to Gary Oldman's Winston Churchill. She also starred as a British agent disguised as a servant to the exiled Kaiser Wilhelm II in the WWII drama film The Exception.

In the follow-up film to Mamma Mia!, titled Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, James played Donna Sheridan, the role originally played by Meryl Streep. The movie came out in July of this year. [17] That same year, James portrayed writer Juliet Ashton in the period drama The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, who writes to and befriends the people of Guernsey, an island off the coast of Normandy that was occupied by the Germans during World War II. [18]

In 2019, James co-starred with Gillian Anderson as Eve Harrington in the stage adaptation of All About Eve by Ivo van Hove. The play opened on February 15 to rave reviews and ran at the Nol Coward Theatre in the West End until May 11.

James played Mrs. de Winter in Ben Wheatley and Armie Hammer's 2020 adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's gothic romance Rebecca. For her role as Peggy Piggott in Simon Stone's 2021 British film adaptation of John Preston's 2007 novel of the same name, "The Dig." She will play Pamela Anderson in the Hulu miniseries Pam & Tommy, set to air in late 2020. [22]

James was hired in September 2022 to represent the Natural Diamond Council, an organization that promotes diamonds only from natural sources. [23]

Existential Issues [ edit ]

In 2008, James' father, James Thomson, passed away from cancer. When she found out there was already an actress by that name, she adopted her dad's first name as her stage name. [24]

She dated former Doctor Who star Matt Smith from 2014 until this year after meeting him on the set of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. [25]

After meeting in 2021, James began dating Michael Shuman, a member of the American rock band U. S Queens of the Stone Age are a rock band. [26][27]
