Elba, Idris

Elba Idrissa Akuna OBE Actor (born September 6, 1972) from England A graduate of London's National Youth Theatre, [3] he is best known for his roles as Stringer Bell (2002–2004) on HBO's The Wire, DCI Luther" target="_blank">John Luther (2010–2019) on BBC One's Luther, and Nelson Mandela (2013’s biopic Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom). A Golden Globe and an Emmy were both given to him four times for his role in Luther, and he ended up winning one of the Golden Globes. [4][5]

American Gangster (2007), Obsessed (2009), and Prometheus (2012) are three of Ridley Scott's films in which Elba has appeared. From Thor (2011) onwards in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), he played the role of Heimdall, and in The Suicide Squad (2021), he played the role of Bloodsport in the DCEU. Other films in which he played a major role include Pacific Rim (2013), Beasts of No Nation (2015) (for which he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Globes and the British Academy Film Awards, respectively), and Molly's Game (2017). Elba has also provided his voice for characters in the 2016 films Zootopia and The Jungle Book as well as the upcoming 2022 film Sonic the Hedgehog 2. In 2018, he made his directing debut with an updated version of Victor Headley's Yardie from 1992. [6]

Elba has other musical pursuits besides acting, including stints as a DJ (under the name DJ Big Driis or Idris) and an R&B singer. His 2016 inclusion in Time magazine's list of the 100 Most Influential People in the World is evidence of this. [3, 7] The total earnings of his filmography as of May 2019 are 8 billion in theaters around the world, grossing over $3 6 billion Among the top twenty highest-grossing actors in North America, [9] he is a huge star. [10]

Early life

Idrissa Akuna Elba's parents, Winston Elba (a Sierra Leonean Creole who worked at the Ford Dagenham plant) and Eve (a Ghanaian), had him on September 6, 1972[11] in the London Borough of Hackney[12]. His parents tied the knot in Sierra Leone [13] and eventually settled in London. Elba went to high school in Canning Town, near where he was born in Hackney and East Ham, [14] where he first took an interest in acting and where he shortened his first name to "Idris." He saw an ad for the play in The Stage, which led to his first major break; he auditioned for the part and met his first agent through the experience. In 1986, he started working for an uncle as a wedding DJ, and by 1987, he had founded his own DJ business with a few buddies. [11]

Elba dropped out of Barking and Dagenham College[17] in 1988 after receiving a £1,500 Prince's Trust grant to pursue a career in the performing arts. In his early career, he had to take odd jobs like tyre-fitting, cold-calling, and night shifts at Ford Dagenham to make ends meet in between roles. At the time, he was known as the DJ moniker "Big Driis," and he worked in nightclubs throughout his teens and early twenties. [11]

Career

Television

Elba made his acting debut in 1994, in a BBC children's drama called The Boot Street Band. Before that, he had appeared in several episodes of Crimewatch murder reconstructions. His first major role was in the 1995 television series Bramwell, a medical drama set in 1890s England. In one episode of Season 1, he played Charlie Carter, an African petty thief who had recently lost his wife in childbirth and was struggling to provide for his daughter. Earlier in 1995, he made his acting debut on Absolutely Fabulous as a gigolo in the episode titled "Sex." Later, she appeared in numerous guest-starring roles on popular British TV shows like The Bill and the Ruth Rendell Mysteries. From there, he appeared on Ultraviolet and Dangerfield, both on television. Soon after, [20] he made the decision to relocate to New York City. On occasion, [11] he would return to England for a television role, such as in an episode of "Inspector Lynley Mysteries." For a New York City stage production of "Troilus and Cressida" in 2001, Elba played the role of Achilles. [11]

In 1997, he had a starring role in the premiere and episode two of Silent Witness series two, "Blood, Sweat, and Tears."

After appearing in a supporting role on an episode of Law & Order in 2001, Elba was cast as a main character in the HBO drama The Wire. The role of Russell "Stringer" Bell, which Elba played from 2002 to 2004, is widely considered to be his most memorable one in the United States. He portrayed Captain Augustin Muganza in the 2005 HBO film Sometimes in April, which was based on the events of the Rwandan genocide. A 2007 BET special titled "Black Men: The Truth" featured Elba. On the Botswana-based series The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, he played the role of Charlie Gotso. Upon its premiere on BBC One on Easter Sunday, March 23, 2008, the series was met with a high 6 Three million people watched, or 27% of the population. [23]

Variety reported in January 2009 that Elba would play Charles Miner, a new rival to Michael Scott's (Steve Carell) position as regional manager for Dunder Mifflin, on NBC's The Office. After the midpoint of the 2009 season, Elba made a six-episode arc and season-ending appearance. [22] He agreed to play the title role in the six-episode BBC series Luther in September 2009, and the show debuted in May of the following year. In 2010, he made an appearance on The Big C on Showtime. Elba won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Series, Miniseries, or Motion Picture Made for Television for his work on the BBC crime thriller series Luther at the 69th annual ceremony broadcast on 15 January 2012. Turn Up Charlie is a Netflix comedy series, and in April of 2018 it was announced that Elba would play the lead role of Charlie. A season after its 15 March 2019 premiere, the show was canceled. He also wrote and starred in the semi-autobiographical comedy In the Long Run. [27]

Films

In the 2007 film Daddy's Little Girls, Elba played the leading role of Monty, a blue collar mechanic who falls in love with the lawyer who is assisting him in gaining custody of his children, only to have his relationship and custody hopes threatened by the return of his ex-wife. Both of the 2007 films he was in, "28 Weeks Later" and "This Christmas," earned nearly $50 million combined. In 2008, he appeared as a lead in the horror film Prom Night and the Guy Ritchie London gangster film RocknRolla. In 2009, he had leading roles in the horror film The Unborn and the thriller Obsessed, in which he was paired off with Beyoncé. The latter grossed $29 million in its first weekend, making it a box office success [30]. [31]

Elba then went on to star in Legacy (2010)[32], in which he played a black ops soldier who returns to Brooklyn after a failed mission in Eastern Europe and a search for vengeance. His role as Roque, the second-in-command of a black-ops team out for revenge against a government that did them wrong, in Dark Castle's adaptation of DC/Vertigo's The Losers, directed by Sylvain White, garnered him critical acclaim. The movie was shot on location in Puerto Rico and premiered in April 2010. Elba made an appearance in the 2010 suspense film Takers, which he starred in. In Kenneth Branagh's Thor (2011) (based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name), he played the role of Heimdall. [35]

Elba was cast as Alex Cross in a new film adaptation of James Patterson's novels in August 2010. On the other hand, Tyler Perry took over the role in February 2011. Elba played an alcoholic warrior monk in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2011), the sequel to 2007's Ghost Rider. Elba announced in February 2012 that he would play Nelson Mandela in the biopic Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, which is based on Mandela's own life story. Elba spent the night alone in a cell on Robben Island, where Mandela was incarcerated, to get into character. [39] He was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama, for his work in the film.

Elba portrayed Captain Janek in Ridley Scott's Prometheus, which was released in June of 2012. He got the part of Stacker Pentecost in the 2013 film Pacific Rim. In 2013, he appeared in Thor: The Dark World as Heimdall again. He officially joined the cast of the film version of Luther in January 2014. He played a psychotic serial killer with a vendetta in 2014's No Good Deed.

Elba portrayed Heimdall in Joss Whedon's superhero smash-hit Avengers: Age of Ultron, released in 2015. Elba co-starred with Abraham Attah in the recently released (in limited release and on Netflix) film Beasts of No Nation. Both the Golden Globe and BAFTA for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture went to him. In 2016, he had several voice roles: the cape buffalo chief of police, Chief Bogo, in Disney's Zootopia, alongside Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman; villainous tiger Shere Khan in The Jungle Book (2016), a live-action adaptation of the animated 1967 film of the same name, directed by Jon Favreau; and sea lion Fluke in Pixar's Finding Dory, alongside Ellen DeGeneres and Albert Brooks both of them resuming their roles from the 2003 film Finding Nemo In the same year, he also played the villainous Krall in Star Trek Beyond.

In 2017, he portrayed Roland Deschain in the film adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower,[43] and he also starred in Aaron Sorkin's directorial debut Molly's Game alongside Jessica Chastain. Elba has had a busy 2019 thus far, having starred as the antagonist in the Fast & Furious spin-off, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, and playing Macavity in Tom Hooper's Cats_(2019_film)" target="_blank">film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical, Cats. In James Gunn's The Suicide Squad (2021), portrayed by Elba, the mercenary Robert "Milton" DuBois / Bloodsport was introduced. Elba voiced Knuckles in 2022's Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the sequel to 2021's Sonic the Hedgehog, which was based on the same franchise, and he'll return to the role in 2023's self-titled solo series for Paramount. Music

Elba has been featured in music videos for artists such as Fat Joe (2002), Angie Stone (2004), and rapper Giggs (2010). Big Man, a four-song EP he recorded for Hevlar Records in 2006, features some of his earlier work. He collaborated with Jay-Z on the album American Gangster's (2007) introduction, which he co-produced and performed. At The Venetian and Ice House Lounge in Las Vegas during the 2007 NBA All Star Weekend, he played as a DJ for the crowd. [51]

Elba served as the show's DJ in July 2009 on BET's current series Rising Icons. Elba has released his debut single, titled "Please Be True." In the August 2009 issue of Essence magazine, he revealed the title of his six-song EP as Kings Among Kings. High Class Problems, Volume 1 EP was released [54]. He reached No. 1 in the UK in February 2010, for which he received numerous accolades, including a nomination for a Billboard Music Award. [55]

As early as 2011, he contributed vocals to the W.A.R. album's introduction. It was the following year that he co-directed and starred in Mumford & Sons' "Lover of the Light" music video. [56]

K. Michelle's "The Rebellious Soul Musical," which he produced in 2014, made its television debut on VH1 on August 19 of that year. Elba was a guest on Mr. Hudson's single "Step Into the Shadows," which was released in May [57]. The album Idris Elba Presents mi Mandela, which featured production from Mr. Hudson, was released in November of 2014. On 12 September 2014, he and Nigerian rapper Phyno appeared on the remix of the single "Selfie" by the Ghanaian group VVIP; the video for the song premiered on YouTube on 11 April 2015.

On the follow-up album by Noel Fielding and Sergio Pizzorno's band, the Loose Tapestries, Elba contributed a rap performance. Elba has also contributed his rapping skills to a remix of Skepta's "Shutdown," which was released on SoundCloud on June 1, 2015 (see reference number 60). Elba's appearance on Nigerian singer D'banj's single "Confidential," also featuring Sierra Leonean rapper Shadow Boxer, was announced on 17 August, and the music video for the song premiered on YouTube on 20 August. Elba served as the opening act for Madonna on the German leg of her Rebel Heart Tour in November of 2015. The 2016 album by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, This Unruly Mess I've Made, also features Elba.

He officially unveiled 7Wallace Music, his record label, in July of 2018. In April of 2019, Elba appeared at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and performed [62]. In 2019, he was a guest on British grime artist Wiley's track "Boasty." Elba's verse from the "Boasty" music video is spoken in a mansion featuring a movie set [64]. [65] In 2019, Elba can be heard on "London Boy," a track off of Taylor Swift's seventh studio album Lover. Elba's voice can be heard briefly in the song's introduction. Released on the label Mau5trap in April of 2020, Elba's "Know Yourself" featured production from Jay Robinson. [67]

In 2020, Elba contacted Canadian R&B singer Emanuel after hearing his debut single "Need You." He proposed the idea of creating a music video out of clips of people talking about what was helping them deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. Elba was listed as the video's creative director, and he is also listed as an executive producer on Emanuel's upcoming debut studio album. [68]

Elba made a guest DJ appearance on Triple J, Australia's national youth broadcaster, for their Mix Up program on February 13, 2021. Cordi Elba, a joint EP by Elba and Australian pop rock duo Lime Cordiale, was released on January 14, 2022 (after being announced on September 22, 2021). [71] Elba and Paul McCartney worked together on a new version of McCartney's song "Long Tailed Winter Bird." "[72]

At the "Defeating Ebola in Sierra Leone" conference in London in October 2014, Elba met with diaspora representatives alongside British cabinet minister Justine Greening.

Elba's BBC Radio 2 show Journey Dot Africa with Idris Elba covered a wide range of African music styles in October 2014. Elba has appeared in several commercials for Sky box sets over the years (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2019) (see [73]). Elba has worked with the British Parliament and Secretary of State for International Development Justine Greening to try to stop the spread of Ebola in West Africa. A collection featuring Elba's design work for the British clothing brand Superdry debuted at the end of November 2015. [75]

In January of 2016, Elba gave a speech to the UK Parliament about the lack of representation of minorities in film and television. Referring to the lack of racial, gender, and sexual orientation diversity, he said, "Change is coming but it's taking its sweet time." [76]

On October 23, 2017, Elba hosted the Best FIFA Football Awards 2017 at the London Palladium. He took a selfie on stage with "the best team in the world," which consisted of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Neymar. [77]

Tree, a play written by Elba and based on the music of his album Idris Elba Presents mi Mandela, had its world premiere at the 2019 Manchester International Festival. Although its authorship was debated [78] The writers Tori Allen-Martin and Sarah Henley claimed they were removed from the production under suspicious circumstances, according to a story published in The Guardian on July 2, 2019. Elba approached the pair and asked them to develop his idea for a musical based on the album, on which Allen-Martin had also collaborated, and the two writers ended up working on the project for four years. In May of 2018, Kwame Kwei-Armah was brought onto the team and immediately set to work reworking some of the existing content. Tree was credited to "Idris Elba and Kwame Kwei-Armah, creators" when it first premiered. After being fired, Allen-Martin and Henley claimed they were threatened with legal action if they told anyone about their involvement in the play's creation, which they said included research, script writing, and the creation of the play's title. Elba and Kwei-Armah both disputed the authors' version of events on Twitter. [82]

He recently inked a deal for his production company, Green Door Pictures, to create original content for Apple. It was announced in January 2021 that Elba and his wife Sabrina Dhowre's production company would be developing an Afrofuturist adult animated and sci-fi series for Crunchyroll, tentatively titled Dantai, set in a future where biotechnology has "created an ever-widening gap between the haves and have-nots." In the Cyberpunk 2077 add-on Phantom Liberty, played by Elba in the year 2020, he takes on the role of Solomon Reed. In addition to providing his voice, he also looks and sounds like the character. [85]

Kickboxing

Idris Elba: Fighter, a Discovery Channel documentary, details Elba's year-long training in kickboxing and mixed martial arts with Muay Thai coach Kieran Keddle[86] and culminates in Elba's first professional kickboxing fight, which he wins against Lionel Graves, a younger, more inexperienced Dutch opponent, at London's York Hall. Intimate sphere

Elba has been married three times. He was first married to Hanne "Kim" Nrgaard from 1999 to 2003 and then to Sonya Nicole Hamlin for four months in 2006. He has a daughter named Isan with his ex-girlfriend Nrgaard[90] and a son named Naiyana Garth. Sabrina Dhowre, a Somali-Canadian model, and Idris Elba started dating in the beginning of 2017. They got engaged at an East London theater on February 10th, 2018 [[during a screening of his film Yardie]]. As of the 26th of April this year (2019), they tied the knot in Marrakesh. [94]

Although Elba claims to be spiritual but not religious. There is no team more beloved by him than Arsenal [95, 96]. In 2015, he set a new land speed record on the Pendine Sands "Flying Mile" course as part of his Discovery Channel miniseries Idris Elba: No Limits. [98]

In April 2009, Elba was appointed as the anti-crime ambassador for The Prince's Trust, a UK youth charity founded by Prince Charles in 1976. In the United Kingdom's 2016 referendum on European Union membership, he advocated for a "remain" vote of "99.99" percent. [100][101]

The pandemic was in full swing when, on March 16, 2020, Elba announced that he and his wife had tested positive for COVID-19. His lifelong battle with asthma put him in the high-risk category for the disease, which he disclosed during his quarantine. Honors and prizes

Elba received the "Essence" award in 2013. ' s Sexiest Man of the Year[105] and, in 2018, People magazine's Sexiest Man Alive. [106] He received a MOBO Inspiration Award in October of 2014. [107]

The 2016 New Year's Honours List recognized Elba's contributions to the theater industry by awarding him the prestigious title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). Back in 2017, he took home the trophy for "Rear of the Year" in Britain [108][109]. [110][better source needed]

As a part of Time Out magazine's 50th anniversary celebration in September 2018, he was recognized as one of 50 individuals who contributed to "making London awesome" and molding London's cultural landscape. In both the Powerlist_2020" target="_blank">2020 and Powerlist_2021" target="_blank">2021 editions of the Powerlist, he was included in the list of the 100 most influential people in the United Kingdom who are of African or African-Caribbean descent.
