The American singer and actress Alexa Demie is known for her role as Maddy Perez on the HBO teen drama series Euphoria. Demie's filmography includes supporting roles in Mid90s (2018) and Waves (2019) as well as her debut in the comedy-drama Brigsby Bear (2017). Many music videos have featured her as well.
Early life [ edit ]
[A] Demie was raised in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Atwater Village. Rose Mendez, a make-up artist, raised Demie after she became pregnant at a "very young" age. Mendez and her family had moved to Los Angeles from Mexico when she was a young girl. Demie has stated that she "didn't grow up with the best male figures in [her] life" or have "much respect for men." She shared a building with several meth addicts and a meth lab, and the Black Eyed Peas' recording studio was just around the corner from her apartment. She claims that she grew up in a home where there was constant bickering and yelling and that she eventually ran away from home when she was a teenager. But her family is "very supportive" and "there for each other," as she has said [9]. Demie was bullied by her peers throughout her school years, from elementary to high school, and calls herself "quite a loner" now. In her final year of high school, she decided to pursue a career in the performing arts. [7]
She spent her free time in high school bedazzling sunglasses she bought in Downtown L.A., which eventually led to the launch of her own sunglasses line, Mainframe, which she sold through a friend's shop on Melrose Avenue. Mainframe glasses were worn by G-Dragon, Jennifer Lopez, Nicki Minaj, and Amber Rose, and they were featured in Vogue Korea, but she soon stopped producing them because she wasn't being compensated for her designs. She also began composing songs and creating costumes for Minaj's early music videos while still in high school, as shown in [11]. Demie wanted to go to art school in New York and study fashion design, but she changed her mind after attending orientation. [13][14]
Career [ edit ]
Azealia Banks' "ATM Jam" music video from 2013 marked Demie's first appearance as a video vixen. After appearing in a friend's short film, she landed the lead role in The Godmother (2015), a film that ultimately was scrapped and was a biopic about Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco. Her first professional acting role was in the 2015 short film Miles, from which she was subsequently discovered by a talent agency. In the second season of the drama series The OA, she played the role of Ingrid, a bilingual gamer, who has since appeared as a guest star on Ray Donovan and Love. Her first single, "Girl Like Me," was released in 2016, and she was featured on Pearl's song "Turnin' Tricks" in the same year. In 2017, she made her film debut as Merideth in the comedy-drama film Brigsby Bear. [3][18] She also appeared in the music video for JMSN's song "Slide" from that same year. In July of 2018, she directed the music video for "Talk is Cheap" by JMSN, which featured Natalie Falt. [20]
In Jonah Hill's 2018 film Mid90s, in which she played the protagonist's love interest Esmee, Demie rose to prominence. Augustine Frizzell, whose 2018 film Never Goin' Back Demie had previously auditioned for, emailed Demie about an audition for the HBO drama series Euphoria, for which Frizzell was directing the pilot episode. Demie had intended to take a break from acting to focus on her music career, but she was so taken with the series' script that she decided to try out for an audition. During the 2019 season of Euphoria, she plays the lead role of Maddy Perez, a popular high school student who has an on-again, off-again, abusive relationship with football quarterback Nate Jacobs (Jacob Elordi). It's been said that Demie is Euphoria's "breakout star" [21, 22]. [3][23]
Demie then played Alexis, a party girl whose boyfriend gets her pregnant, in the 2019 film Waves. She watched videos about codependency and drew on her own experience with an emotionally abusive relationship with a high school boyfriend, which she described as "very codependent," to create the relationship between Kelvin Harrison Jr.'s character, a popular but troubled high school wrestler played by Harrison Jr.[10][24][25]. She had a small role in the music video for The Neighbourhood's song "Stargazing" in 2020 and appeared in the comedy-drama film Mainstream in 2020 as Isabelle Roberts, a game show viewer. In the 2021 short film Nineteen on Fire, written and directed by Ryan Simpkins, Demie portrayed a drug dealer. [27][28][29] Her single "Leopard Limo (Archive LL11)" came out in September 2021. [18]
Fairy Tales, a collection of erotic short stories written with photographer Petra Collins and featuring photographs of Demie dressed as various mythical creatures taken by Collins, was published by Rizzoli in November 2021. The upcoming animated series Fables [4, 31] will feature her voice work. [32]

Notes [ edit ]
- ^ Several websites have posted conflicting information about Demie's age and birth date. While various outlets state that she was 24 years old in 2019, an online list of alumni from the 2008 graduating class of John Marshall High School in Los Angeles listed her name, while a viral TikTok video showed her in a 2007 high school yearbook, which would make her, as of 2022 be at least 31 years old [1][2]
