Adam Schlesinger, a rock musician, was his cousin [6,7,8,9]. [10]

Born and raised in the small Maryland town of Cabin John Sidwell Friends School is where he earned his diploma in 1995. His younger self, he says, was always a "troublemaker," [11] as he has said many times. He attended Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York, right after high school, but he ultimately decided not to finish his degree. Alma Becker, his acting coach, suggested he enroll in the Moscow Art Theatre School in Russia, so he did. While in Russia, he played professional baseball as a catcher for one of the country's teams. Bernthal's performance as Shane Walsh in Frank Darabont's adaptation of the popular comic book series The Walking Dead was well received by critics. A series regular until 2012, he was nominated for a Breakout Performance - Male Scream Award in 2011. Bernthal and Darabont worked together again on the TNT series Mob City, in which Bernthal played LAPD Detective Joe Teague, a law enforcement official in a crime-ridden 1940s Los Angeles. The show was cancelled after a single season. [23]

Bernthal's filmography during this time includes 2009's Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian as gangster Al Capone and Roman Polanski's thriller The Ghost Writer as a supporting character. He also made an appearance in the Woody Harrelson film Rampart in 2011. He had guest-starring roles on shows like "Numbers" and "Harry's Law." "Small Engine Repair," a black comedy written and starring Bernthal, had its world premiere in 2011. Bernthal's performance was singled out for its "energy and wit," and the critics nominated him for an Ovation Award for his work in the play. After its Broadway run, MCC Theater moved Small Engine Repair Off-Broadway, and Bernthal was recast in the title role. [25][26] Since Bernthal had to drop out of the play due to his filming schedule, James Badge Dale was cast in his place. [27]

The Punisher and Marvel: 2015–2019 [ edit ]

Season 2 of Daredevil on Netflix premiered on March 18, 2016, following an announcement by Marvel that Jon Bernthal would play Frank Castle/The Punisher. Although Bernthal was hesitant to join the superhero genre at first, he was inspired to accept the role of Matt Murdock by the work of Charlie Cox (Matt Murdock) and Vincent D'Onofrio (Wilson Fisk) in the first season of Marvel's Daredevil. Bernthal's turn as The Punisher was praised by critics; IGN specifically called it "an absolutely stellar, gutting performance." "Jon Bernthal gives The Punisher the kind of pathos that's underneath the tough guy and I really like that," said comic book writer and co-creator Gerry Conway of Bernthal's performance, making it Conway's favorite on-screen portrayal of the character. [39]

A spinoff of the character's self-titled series, The Punisher, was released on Netflix on November 17, 2017 despite not having been ordered by the streaming service at the time. Many have praised his work in the first season as "possibly the best grizzly antihero performance among all of Marvel's Netflix series to date" and "a truly remarkable and intense performance" as the title character. Bernthal often does his own stunts for the show. [40][41] Season two of the Netflix show premiered on January 18, 2019, after being renewed on December 12, 2017. The show was canceled a month later [[43]]. [44]

Bernthal played The Mute in the Irish action thriller film Pilgrimage[46]. The actor didn't interact with anyone on set for the first few weeks because he wanted to maintain his character's anonymity. Bernthal "steals the film with his intense, nearly wordless performance," as stated by The Hollywood Reporter, which praised his acting. filled the screen with his ripped physique and imposing demeanor. [48]

Both the first season of The Punisher and the movie Sweet Virginia premiered on Netflix on November 17, 2017. Critics lauded Bernthal's performance as the kind motel owner suffering from Parkinson's disease in Sweet Virginia. Bernthal's interview with Jim Norton and Sam Roberts at the time made headlines because of his comments about how Kevin Spacey (who had recently faced sexual assault charges) made him feel uncomfortable while filming Baby Driver. [49][50][51] Bernthal claimed he "lost all respect" for Spacey and that "[Spacey] was a bit of a bully" [52][53] When Bernthal's daughter became ill that same month, he had to turn down a role in the upcoming biopic First Man (2018). In the ninth season's "What Comes After," he reprised his role from the 2018 film Widows, a heist thriller directed by Steve McQueen. [56][57]

In the low-budget thriller The Peanut Butter Falcon, Bernthal portrayed Shia LaBeouf's (fisherman) brother. In James Mangold's action biopic Ford v. Ferrari, he played business tycoon Lee Iacocca. The film's production started in the summer of 2018, and it premiered in the fall of 2019. This past summer, [58] Bernthal was in production on Those Who Wish Me Dead, a western film directed by Taylor Sheridan. The release date is May of 2021. In 2011, he made his stage debut as Terrance Swaino in the play Small Engine Repair, which was later adapted for the big screen. In September of 2021, the movie was finally released. Bernthal joined the cast of The Many Saints of Newark, the HBO The Sopranos prequel film, in January 2019. The film is set for release in October 2021. Bernthal played the love interest of Sandra Bullock's murderous character in the Netflix movie The Unforgivable (61). citation neededIn this case, the citation is required.

During the years 2017 and 2019, work will be done in the gaming industry. [ edit ]

In addition to his voice acting career, Bernthal has also appeared in video games as a non-playable character (NPC). In Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, he plays the role of LT Cole D. Walker, who was shown in a trailer for the 2019 game Borderlands 3, but whose likeness or voice were not included in the final product for whatever reason[62]. citation needed(Citation required)

Predicted future endeavors [ edit ]

Bernthal's casting in the upcoming Black List feature film adaptation of the 2006 short story "Snow Ponies" was announced in October 2018;[63] however, production on the film has not yet begun. Bernthal, who was cast in Joel Edgerton's still-in-development film Stingray in October 2016, will play the lead role. In October 2022, it was announced that Bernthal would be reprising his role as Frank Castle/The Punisher in Marvel Cinematic Universe projects from Marvel Studios. These projects include a new series, Daredevil: Born Again, in development for Disney+.
