Whether you’re looking for a romantic date idea or just want to experience the magic of the theater, plan a night out with these itineraries for dinner and a show in New Jersey.

NORTH

Dance, jazz, R&B, opera—it’s all at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Newark’s premier entertainment and performance venue, hosting events in both its intimate Victoria Theater and its grand Prudential Hall. At the sophisticated Italian eatery Nico Kitchen Bar located nearby, choose from an array of prix fixe menus, whether you want the matinee menu or a 3-course performance menu.

If you’re visiting Morristown, you’ve got to plan an evening at Mayo Performing Arts Center, which hosts more than 200 performances each year, ranging from sing-alongs and family events to orchestral concerts and pop star performances. Housed in a 1937 red brick building with stately white columns, this elegant setting is ideal for a night at the theatre. Before or after your show, pick one of the many restaurants along South Street for a bite to eat.

CENTRAL

If you’re looking for big-name artists and high-quality performances, the State Theatre in New Brunswick is the place to visit. Buy a ticket to a Broadway show, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra performance or a production by international theater or dance troupes. Top off your luxurious experience with a pre-theater prix fixe dinner at The Frog and the Peach, serving seasonal farm-to-table fare in an upscale environment.

For an intimate, community experience, check out Deal Park’s Axelrod Performing Arts Center, where documentary screenings and youth performances fill the calendar alongside musicals and more. Or, in nearby Asbury Park, go for a more casual (but unforgettable) experience when you catch a live performance at The Stone Pony, a legendary bar and music venue dating back to 1974. This iconic venue is famous for launching the careers of Bruce Springsteen and Steve Van Zandt, and to this day, top stars take over its stage. Before or after the show, savor upscale comfort food, from a New York Strip Steak to a roasted half-chicken, at Brickwall Tavern & Dining Room located nearby.

SOUTH

There’s something for the whole family at the Broadway Theatre of Pitman, where the performance calendar features a lineup of Broadway productions and even a whole season full of children’s theater. Stroll along Broadway for a quick meal at one of the many little eateries.

Housed in a 1800s church, the Cape May Stage offers a glimpse into the eclectic community of Cape May while featuring everything from mysteries and dramas to love stories and Broadway remakes. Take advantage of the Dinner and a Show promotion, featuring special deals and prix fixe menus paired with a theater ticket.

If you’re looking for dinner with a show, Elaine’s in Cape May is a boutique hotel, restaurant and dinner theater all in one. Make a reservation in this Victorian mansion for an evening of offbeat theatrical productions and gourmet meals.

The staff is friendly, and their ticketing has improved from when the venue first opened. The line-up is varied and appealing, the movies offered are both offbeat and popular as are their special projects. The biggest downside of the place is the food - absolutely pathetic! Oriented as a movie theater snack menu with additional upscale light food offerings, the availability of items is sporadic. I have never been there without having to make a 2nd or 3rd selection because they have "run out" of items. And more importantly, the quality of the food preparation is abysmal! Parking is simple and free on the street right around the venue (there is plenty). The staff is super friendly, and the facility is perfect for sit down live music. The main level has about 140 seats, about 100 of which are around tables, the other 40 at the back are more traditional fold down theater seats but they have a ledge in front for drinks and food. We had the great opportunity to go see one of our very favorite performers last week at the Hopewell Theatre in Hopewell, NJ. As soon as we saw Tom Rush was performing, we snagged the tickets and blocked off the date. What a marvelous little facility only an hour from our home. Tom Rush was magnificent, as he was in the late 60s when we first saw him. But the true surprise and delight was the theatre. The acoustics were fantastic, and there is not a bad seat in the house. We opted for not having dinner there but it looked as though the folks who did thoroughly enjoyed it. The prices for drinks and snacks were reasonable.

We are on the mailing list now and will get out there to the Hopewell Theatre again and again. More

I"ve visited the Hopewell Theater multiple times in the past year and each time I'm so impressed. A real community asset. The quality of programming and aesthetic are excellent. Most recently my wife and I attended the Carbon Leaf show. Short: so great to hear a band in a small, intimate setting.

Hopefully more community members will discover what they've been missing.

They manage to ruin a plain hot dog more than any other place in the Western Hemisphere!

Crowns Square 2022.png

A moving and celebratory musical play in which hats become a springboard for an exploration of black history and identity as seen through the eyes of a young black woman who has come down South to stay with her aunt after her brother is killed in Brooklyn. Hats are everywhere, in exquisite variety, and the characters use the hats to tell tales concerning everything from the etiquette of hats to their historical and contemporary social functioning. There is a hat for every occasion, from flirting to churchgoing to funerals to baptisms, and the tradition of hats is traced back to African rituals and slavery and forward to the New Testament and current fashion. Some rap but predominantly gospel music and dance underscore and support the narratives. The conclusion finds the standoffish young woman, whose cultural identity as a young black Brooklyn woman has been so at odds with the more traditional and older Southern blacks, embracing hats and their cultural significance as a part of her own fiercely independent identity.

Life After 50.png

A new comedy that flirts with a topical theme: the aging of the Baby Boomer generation. Three couples who all raised their kids on the same street have found a way to keep in touch after they move to new cities. Each year, on Labor Day weekend, the friends plan a vacation together. This year, the ladies have planned a little surprise: a healthy, all-natural weekend at a trendy health resort, complete with organic food and exercise. The men, who really come for the beer and snacks, are not pleased when they find out. Tensions escalate into an all-out battle of the sexes, and the cabin is divided… literally… into the men against the women. They battle over health food, exercise, pizza, The Godfather, rock and roll, hot tubs, hot flashes, tummy tucks and their refusal to become middle-aged!

New Jersey is home to dozens of theaters, perhaps hundreds. We have massive movie theaters, art house gems, Broadway-style shows, cinema cafes and so much more. Everyone has a favorite, and while most are more than adequate, these theaters all offer something extra special. Please note that this isn’t a ranking, each theater is unique.

1. Hunterdon Hills Playhouse, Hampton

New Jersey's premier dinner theater, Hunterdon Hills Playhouse provides high quality live entertainment, delicious dining options, and an endless dessert buffet. A unique experience, this is truly a magical place.
2. AMC Dine-In Theaters, Bridgewater - Edison - West Orange
A new twist on dinner and a movie, have dinner AT the movies. You'll enjoy plush, spacious seating and classic American favorites. Seat-side service and a full bar add to the experience, and the milkshakes are just delightful. This is definitely something everyone should try at least once.
3. The Levoy Theatre, Millville
The Levoy Theatre has a rich history, beginning in 1908. Once host to popular vaudeville acts, film soon became a more prevalent medium. The theatre adapted and was eventually bought by Warner Brothers. Sadly, business began to decline in the 1950s and the theatre was closed in 1974. Reopened in 2012, the Levoy now hosts a wide range of shows. Upcoming performances include live bands, musical theater and stand-up comedy shows. Most interesting to me is Cirque Zuma Zuma, an entrancing African-style circus. Ticket prices vary but are very affordable.

10. Dunellen Cinema Cafe, Dunellen
This family-friendly theatre offers affordable tickets and delicious food. What an incredible deal!

13. Robert's Chatham Cinema, Chatham
This single screen art house cinema offers free coffee, fewer previews, fantastic artwork and frozen yogurt. Tucked away in a strip mall, it's a hidden gem.
14. Delsea Drive-in Theatre, Vineland
I may have mentioned this theatre in previous posts, but that's only because it can't be missed. It's the last remaining drive-in theatre in New Jersey, offers great prices, double features, delicious concessions and a dose of nostalgia. Currently closed for the season, they reopen in the spring.

The immersive 3D experience provided by an IMAX theatre is something everyone needs to enjoy at least once. Tropicana's IMAX Theatre offers unforgettable films and is currently playing Star Wars: The Force Awakens as well as an undersea adventure, Deep Sea 3D.
16. IMAX Theater at Liberty Science Center, Jersey City
Those in the North Jersey area can enjoy the world's largest IMAX dome theater. Located within the Liberty Science Center, programming is often centered around science, technology and nature. If you've always wanted to travel the world, you'll feel like you have after a visit here. Current shows allow you to dive with Humpback Whales, explore secluded caves, get up close with robots and see Antarctica like never before.

Of course, this list is just the beginning. Share your favorite theaters in New Jersey and let me know why you love them. I would like to do a part two to showcase more of the great theaters around our state, providing both live performances and spectacular cinematographic experiences.

So, you’re thinking about throwing your own murder mystery party, huh?  A murder mystery is an all-around excellent choice.  We’re you’re expert on all things mysterious, and here to tell you that whether you’re planning a family reunion, Susie’s sweet-16 birthday, or your company’s next team building event, a murder mystery is a fantastic idea.

Your guests will be thrilled to participate in something more exciting than just plain old dinner. Murder mystery parties are unique and can be customized one-of-a-kind events. They’re great for enhancing and developing relationships.  Your guests will interact with each other and learn new things about people they’ve known for years. (Like the fact that your show-off brother-in-law has a photographic memory and can remember every clue)!  Our thrilling mystery parties challenge the brain.  They polish your guests’ rusty powers of deduction, so they’re able to put all the pieces together to solve the puzzle—and win a prize!   If you’re organizing a corporate event, a murder mystery is a fun, creative way to stimulate morale and train coworkers to communicate with each other more effectively.  Employees will sharpen their decision-making and listening skills and develop enhanced levels of cooperation and leadership.

Riddlesbrood’s shows are professional, high-energy fun! Starting with their extensive pre-preparation process, they’ll ask many questions to determine what your needs are and help you choose the best party theme depending on your event’s location and your gathering’s special occasion like a reunion, birthday, wedding, or corporate conference.   In addition, certain shows may work better for specific groups.  For example, an older crowd might prefer a roaring 1920s theme, while a pirate show is usually a big hit with a younger crowd.  The actors arrive at least an hour before your guests to set everything up and discuss details with you to ensure a magnificent experience for everyone.  And, when the show is over, they clean everything up, so you don’t have to.  Just try getting your cousin Andy to help clean up afterwards!
